For Van Leeuwen’s first shop in Washington, DC, we transformed this corner spot on 14th St NW into a vibrant, transparent, welcoming space to gather and enjoy ice cream. Wraparound storefront glazing is extended full height to maximize transparency and views, patio canopy is reinvigorated with translucent cellular polycarbonate panels, colorful paint and illuminated signage beckon, melding with the streetscape. Inside, removing a dropped ceiling allows a more gracious space, with exposed open web joists, new ductwork and integrated lighting, all painted a luminous white. A playful, imaginative mural along the wall imparts joy, visible from inside and out. Equipment layout is optimized for service efficiency, custom millwork integration, and reduced queueing. Tactical interventions yield a refreshing result, both drawing from and riffing on Van Leeuwen’s iconic brand identity.
